DI.GI.MA. operates in Villanterio, in the province of Pavia, preparing animal products for various production sectors. The business dates back to the 1960s, when Angelo Dinosio began processing animal by-products, sparking an entrepreneurial journey built on experience, innovation, and a focus on processes. Today, the company produces animal fats and meat-based protein meals used in livestock farming, pet food, fertilizer production, and the chemical industry. Processing begins with carefully selected raw materials classified as Category 3, as required by European veterinary regulations. These materials come from animals deemed fit for human consumption before being sent for processing. Through a flexible and controlled production process, DI.GI.MA. develops solutions consistent with customer requirements, providing technical information, clarifications, and support in order management.

Project Title: OLSA - Optimization of Animal By-Product Processing
European Union contribution: €25,000.00
The project included the following activities:
- Detailed analysis of the current business process and a new process layout to collect data for lifecycle assessment.
- Characterization of the animal meal produced by the company.
- Testing different rabbit meal treatment processes to improve protein digestibility
- Life cycle assessment (LCA) of both the current process and a proposed innovative solution.
Purpose
The main objective of this project was to improve the company's environmental and economic sustainability by optimizing production processes both through a reduction in energy consumption and by increasing the nutritional quality of the final product in terms of protein digestibility.
Results
The trials conducted allowed us to verify the possibility of increasing protein digestibility and therefore the commercial quality of the company's protein flour. Based on the increase in digestibility and the percentage of amino acids, the best-performing solution achieved a 13% increase in digestibility. Furthermore, the environmental impacts of a new design proposal were assessed, which involves both the installation of a fume abatement and wastewater treatment line, modifying the existing one, and increasing the company's production capacity. Environmental performance was found to be better than the current solution, with a reduction of between 15% and 44% for all impact indicators, including, for example, climate change, land use, water resource depletion, and the depletion of mineral, fossil, and renewable resources.
